Three Ph.D student opportunities are available in the Hydrometeorology & Climatology Research Group, at the School of Geography and Earth Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/~geo/index.html) focusing on:
(a) CO2, water vapor and energy flux measurements from three different-age (65, 33, 5-yr old) afforested conifer forest ecosystems at Turkey Point in southern Ontario using eddy covariance technique and soil CO2 flux observations using a chamber system.
Objectives are to evaluate the response of different age forest ecosystem to
environmental stresses such as drought and temperature
stresses etc.
(b) Stand level carbon and nitrogen cycle modeling using Canadian Land
Surface Scheme (CN-CLASS). The objectives are to improve
understanding of processes controlling (a) fluxes of carbon, water and
energy and (b) nutrient cycling in different-age forest
ecosystems, using observed fluxes.
(c) Regional ecosystem modeling using the Canadian Terrestrial Ecosystem
Model (CTEM). The project objectives are to explore the
impacts of natural and anthropogenic effects (i.e. N deposition, CO2
fertilization, other environmental stresses etc) on simulated
carbon, water and nitrogen exchanges in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly
forests. Analysis will involve conducting sensitivity
tests under various future climate change scenarios. Both CLASS and CTEM are
used in the Canadian GCM.
This research is being funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering
Research Council (NSERC) of Canada. Turkey Point flux sites
are also associate sites of the Canadian Carbon Program or Fluxnet-Canada.

These opportunities are available from January 2008 (winter term). Review of
the applications will begin immediately. Qualified
candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, copy of their grades and
list of courses taken in the past and names of two
referees to Dr. Altaf Arain at following address, preferable by 20 November
2007. Modeling students must have strong programming
skills in Fortran and preferably in Unix or Linux.
