Chevening Scholarship is a well-known scholarship scheme for international students who wish to study in the United Kingdom. The scheme is funded by the British government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In most countries, the local office of the British Council selects the appropriate candidates each year and manages the administration of the scholarship. The number of available scholarships varies from country to country.
The Chevening Scholarship Scheme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), targets the future generation of leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers early in their careers. Globally, approximately 1,000 new scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarships may cover all or part of the total study costs.
The scholarships are usually awarded to students intending to pursue 12 month Master’s degree programmes. Occasionally scholarships are awarded for shorter courses or programmes of study. The minimum period of study in the UK is three months. The typical successful applicant will display both intellectual ability and leadership potential.
Applications should be made to the British Embassy/High Commission or the British Council in an applicant’s own country of origin. The applicant must be resident in their country of origin at the time of application. The closing date for applications is normally 12 months before the start of the academic year for which the award is sought.
