The Institute for European Studies (IES) invites applications for the position of a PhD researcher for a maximum duration of four years (beginning in January 2008). The IES is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Its research focuses on the role of the EU as a global actor and on the interaction between the internal and external dimensions of EU policies and between EU policies and other international institutions and organisations. More information on the institute and its research strategy can be found here.
The IES seeks a PhD researcher working on a project funded by the Flemish Research Council FWO. The project aims at advancing research on regulatory complexes in international and European governance by exploring the area of access to and benefit sharing from genetic resources. It starts from the notion that the proliferation of international institutions and European legislative instruments increasingly calls for an integrated investigation of institutional/regulatory complexes and their interplay. The project is expected to contribute both conceptually and empirically to this cutting-edge area of research by exploring the dynamically evolving issue-area of access to and benefit sharing from genetic resources, which is co-governed by various international and European regulatory frameworks.
The successful candidate is expected to develop the project under the supervision of IES Academic Director Sebastian Oberthür with the aim of completing his/her PhD before the end of the project. Further information on the project is available on request from ies@vub.ac.be (reference: FWO project).
Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
A master degree in political science/international relations (or equivalent) or a law degree accompanied by proven expertise in relevant areas of political science/international relations;

Fluency in English (written and spoken);
